Mientras que los altares y las ofrendas varían como variada es la tierra en México, algunas tradiciones generalmente se mantienen casi intactas.

Actualmente, el Día de Muertos en México, representa una mezcla de la devoción cristiana con las costumbres y creencias prehispánicas y se materializa en el tradicional altar-ofrenda, una de las tradiciones más mexicanas. El altar-ofrenda es un rito respetuoso a la memoria de los muertos, su propósito es atraer sus espíritus. Consiste en obsequiar a los difuntos que regresan ese día a convivir con sus familiares, con los alimentos y objetos preferidos por ellos en vida, para que vuelvan a gozar durante su breve visita. En la ofrenda o altar de los muertos no deben faltar la representación de los cuatro elementos primordiales de la naturaleza.

Tierra, representada por sus frutos que alimentan a las ánimás con su aroma.

Viento, representado por algo que se mueva, tan ligero como el viento, empleándose generalmente papel picado o papel de china.

Agua, un recipiente para que las ánimas calmen su sed después del largo camino que recorren para llegar hasta su altar.

Fuego, una vela por cada alma que se recuerde y una por el alma olvidada.

En la ofrenda también se coloca sal que purifica, copal para que las ánimas se guíen por el olfato, flor de cempasúchitl que se riega desde la puerta hasta el altar para indicar el camino a las almas. Aquí, siempre hay alguno de la familia esperando la llegada de ellas para demostrarle su respeto y compañía.
